LefkadaThe island of Lefkas, Lefkada lies off the mainland west coast in the middle of the Ionian chain of Greek islands. It is so close to the mainland that it only just qualifies as an island. It was the Corinthians who cut a canal through sandbanks in 600 BC to separate it.

Since the opening of mainland Preveza-Aktio-Lefkas airport and a swing bridge across the channel, Lefkada become very attractive and a favourite destination to holiday makers.

Lefkas means 'white' and the island's white rock makes its cliffs attractive.

Santa Maura Castle and Lefkada TownSaint Mavra Castle
In year 1204 the island of Lefkada was an integral part of the dominion of Epirus.

However in the year 1294, Lefkada was captured by the French and was bestowed as a gift to John who was at that time the Count of Orsini.
With the passage of time he built the foundations of the Saint Mavra Castle, which can still be seen standing upright at the island’s entrance.

The castle of Saint Mavra is ideally located besides the channel and is within close proximity to Chora. At the time of inception, in the medieval period, the entire neighbourhood was named Castle of Saint Mavra and historians are of the opinion that for quite sometime the name was used to indicate the whole of Lefkada Island.
