Nidri village areaNidri is the island's biggest resort and has a lovely setting at the mouth of the long and impressive inlet of Vlycho bay. It is located on the island's east coast, about 17km south of Lefkas Town. Local amenities, such as shops, super-markets, cafes and tavernas line the sea front of Nidri village and a large section of the beach has been used to build a new quay. Music bars and a couple of nightclubs open in the summer as well.

Beaches are found to the north of the town. They have great settings and marvellous views .The Sea is clean, shallow and calm. Nidri beach offers water sports such as water-skiing, water-bicycles and catamaran are available for rent.
Sun beds, umbrellas and water sports facilities can be found there, as well as restaurants and bars.

Nidri village and golf of vlichoNidri is a major yachting centre and boats always seem to fill the bay with the annual Ionian Regatta in late September one of the highlights of the Mediterranean year.

Ferries leave here daily for tours of the local islets and to the many secluded bays that lie along this part of the coast. The little port of Nidri offers daily services to the islands of Ithaca, Kefallonia and Meganissi.

Inland from Nidri the land is fairly flat and cycle rides through the olive groves are popular, with several good walking paths in the nearby hills. A trip to the Dimossari waterfall is worth a visit. The waterfalls, about 4km from Nidri, get more spectacular the higher you climb.

Opposite Nidri village there is Scorpios Island of Famous Magnate Shipping Aristotle Onassis and Madouri Island of Greek poet, Aristotelis Valaoritis.

Scorpios Island

Nidri village and golf of vlichoAristotelis Onassis was born in Smyrna in 1906. In 1922 he arrived in Greece as a refugee, and shortly thereafter immigrated to Argentina. In 1932 he bought his first ship, which he named Calliroe after his sister. Onassis used to be one of the world’s biggest Shipping Magnates, owning mainly oil tankers. He became a legendary figure, not only in worldwide financial circles but also in the eyes of ordinary people.

In 1956 he acquired from the Greek State the concession to operate an air transport company and founded Olympic Airways. The Company started to operate on the 6th April 1957, with a standard of service for the passengers, which would be inconceivable nowadays, for cost reasons. Olympic Airways was soon flying to destinations all over the world, and won a name for itself as one of the safest airline companies.

In 1963, Aristotle Onassis bought Scorpios, opposite Nidri, a small, barren, waterless Island in the Ionian Sea, which he transformed into a small earthly paradise by planting thousands of trees and building small guesthouses. This part of the Ionian was his favorite place and it was his custom to spend a few days of his vacation there, in the company of the famous people who were his friends - one result of which was that Greece became ever more widely known.

Madouri island

Madouri Island

Madouri is the island where the renowned Greek Poet Aristotelis Valaoritis was born, raised and wrote his poems. The poet was known for his exploits during the post-liberation period. It is a little, green island where huge pine trees touch the sea with their branches.

Dimossari Waterfalls

Waterfals at Nidri (Dimossari area)Lefkada has an abundant storage of underground water which is one of the principal reasons why a major part of the island is lush with greenery. The high mountains that abound in Lefkada are the sources for many waterfalls that cascades through the mountainous terrain and finally ending up into the sea. One such gorgeous cascading waterfall is the Dimossari waterfall that can be found on the outskirts of Nidri about 4km. It ends up into a gorge which is replete with white rocks. The name "Dimossari" has been derived from the word "Dimos" which used to be the ancient state where numerous watermills were found.

During the summer season, when the temperature gets really hot, tourists come to the Dimossari Waterfalls to relieve themselves from the sweltering heat and many of them can be seen swimming in the crystal clear waters of the lakes which can be found among the rocky contours.
